A knock has developed in the rear end( i think)I jacked up the rear wheels and spun them independently, and then spun them with the motor running, no knock. applied the brakes ,no knock. hubs are tight on axles. un jacked it and the knock was there as i drove it.there used to be several seconds between knocks, as if there was something attached to the wheel and it was hitting the fender but now it far more frequent and gaining frequency. any tips on how to detrmine the problem?

have you checked the wheel hold down clamp bolts. if the clamps are loose it could produce a knocking sound.
or could be rear axle brg.

Sounds like downstream of the transmission and differential if its internal. With the brakes loading everything ahead of the bull pinion gears you should be able to recreate the sound forward in the drive train from there. With a helper ready to stop the tractor and you behind with a jack. Put the tractor in a forward gear. Have helper hold brake of the side not raised. with the other side turning let the jack down just enough to load each tire at a time to find noise side. Probably a axle bearing or bull gear or pinion tooth bad. Or maybe a bull pinion shaft bearing or broken bearing housing. My best guess is a ball seperator and retainer has broke in one of the axle bearings if its inside.

Put a dab of finger nail polish on each wheel rim clamp and bolt. Let it dry for 10 minutes, then drive it, if they are cracked, they are loose! Jim
