Well, something of a success last night. I found the serial number of my grandfather's first Farmall H! It had been sitting right under my nose all my life and nearly all of my Dad's life too. I wasn't even looking for it when I found it. I have my grandfather's copy of 'Instructions for Special Attachments For McCormick-Deering Farmall-H and M Tractors', which I had always thought was bought for the Farmall M. I was talking with a friend on the telephone and glanced down at the book. In faint pencil near the bottom left of the cover is written FBH 37511. So now I know exactly what to look for, if it survived! Pictures attached.

1940 would be correct. The tractor was delivered on Wednesday 12th February 1941. The diary entry for that day reads: "Loaded F12 onto Whatley's truck, then multitude of odd jobs, really awaiting arrival of new one, which eventually turned up at 6.30 pm." Now, if I can find the serial number of the F12, it will be wonderful!

Are tractors registered in Australia as they are in parts of europe? if so it may be tracable. Best of luck. Even just the numbers are cool to have. Jim
 
Sadly many tractors are not registered here, even today. In the 1930s and up until the 1960s hardly any farmer would bother to spend the money. No local policeman would stop a local farmer on a tractor. Moreover the roads board (now VicRoads) has always just assigned a random serial number to older machines sometimes in addition to, but also instead of the genuine chassis or serial number. I now know that the F12 which was sold had rear wheel extensions fitted when it left the farm for the last time to go to the IHC sale yard.
