Im pulling the engine on my M and Ive been told that I should bolt a chain to opposite corners of the block where the head bolts screw into the block in order to pull it out with my hoist....

Can anyone tell me the size of the bolt, length of the threads (how deep the holes are) and which thread, coarse/fine, it is? Im trying to get everything together so I can break down the motor and pull it without having to run for parts...

thanks

Just use your head bolts.Make,or buy a couple of 'lifting eyes',attach the chain to these. If you are really worried, add 1/2" to the length....

also need to be careful when using the block studs , cause if you use the outside ones on each end they will have tendancy to bend. you can slip a piece of correct size pipe over the stud and then install the nut. this keeps the chain anchored near block to prevent bending, and also can anchor chain more inwards from the ends.

That's how I roll.

Can't see much, but it is better than nothing.

I think I told you that. I believe they are 1/2". I just use bolts I have on hand. I don't recommend the original studs because they might bend. They need to be screwed only part way into the hole. The length is such that they won't bend either. I use washers on the outside of the chain. And regardless of what others say on this forum, I split my Super M, removed the radiator to get it out of the way, took the bolts out of the engine mounts, left both the rails on and lifted it out. I may have removed the back plate first, don't remember. I usually just do whatever works with safety as first priority.

sorry, I guess im just not seeing it in my head...are you bolting the chain directly to the block with one washer to stop the bolt head from pulling through?
