Biggest difference is the 826 had the 91 hp D358 german diesel.there some unimportant small subtle differences The 856 had the 100hp D407 engine. The 826 was introduced in '70 to directly compete with the Jd 4020.the 856 was bigger and more money,so farmers were buying 4020s,

I thought the 826 and 1026 had only hydrostatic transmissions or was it possible to get them with a gear drive trans.? Armand

Yes the 826 was available in gear or hydro vertions.I own a 826 hydro
(love it!),a neighbor 2miles downthe road has a 826 gear.the 856 was gear only.The 1026 was hydro only.The 1026 was a 'hybrid'of sorts.It had 1456 hood/raditor;1256 engine;hydrostatic trans;856 rear end/hitch.

Engines were the main difference. The could both be had with gasoline engines which were not real common and the 826 had the German 358 diesel and was available in gear drive or hydro. 856 had the D407 engine and was only available in gear drive. I think the 856 might have had a little bit heavier rear end and axels but not sure. The D358 German diesel was a fine engine although they are getting very spendy to overhaul due mainly to parts availability. Unless I needed the hydro I would stay with the 856 because the D407 as well as just about everything else on that tractor was bullet proof.

826/856 share the same rear end/trans.The 826 is lighter because of it's smaller engine,radiator,hood...In fact,I am 99.99% sure that the 706 through the 856(maybe even the 966) share that same rearend/transmission.

Okay thanks for the info. If those were the only differences I would say it was a waste of time for IH to build the 826 in anything but a Hydro. There couldn't have been much difference in weight comparing an 826 diesel gear drive to an 856 diesel.

06-56 series had the same rear ends. 66 series had a whole new (and much bigger/heavier) rear-end. That's excluding the 6's, I guess very little changed on them, still had manual brakes on the 686 even, not hydraulic.

You will find the 826 more closely match's the 756 in bull gear, bull pinion, fuel tank, height of hood over console etc than it does the 856. Also, there are several differences in the original 706-806 final drives to the 56 and 66 series the way they designed the bull pinion bearing cages and brake housings.

The 856 was the higher priced unit, more expensive Diesel engine, gas was still fuel hog 301, same for 826/856, no sleeves, by then diesel outsold gas by large margin. The 826 hydro had 706 bull gears, 826 gear had 856 bull gear. I think it was because shock load was less in hydros.
