M 12V Conversion

I am just about finished with the 6 to 12 M conversion. Does anyone know if I have to change the light switch. I thought just the bulbs. I have a self exciting alt. Thanks

thanks, I seen something on a conversion chart but now that I think about it possibly they were referring to an external regulator. Thanks again, we will press ahead.

Sparky, basic rule on switches is that if they are rated for 6 volt they will handle the amp draw of 12 volt for the same circut. That's one of the advantages to 12 volt. Less amps to make stuff work so smaller wires and switches can be used.

Sparky, Don't know anything about an external regulator but you might be thinking about the ballast resistor which is used to reduce the voltage to the points to 6 volts so they have a normal life. The ballast resistor goes in the wiring prior to the coil unless you are using a new 12 volt coil which has one built in. Most folks retain the existing 6 volt coil and use a ballast resistor which is much less in price then a new coil. Hope this adds some clarification and not confusion to your conversion as the regulator is internal in the alternator, Hal.

thanks, yes I purchased a ballast resistor and wired it in. Not sure where I got the regulator, maybe from one of the old charts, thanks

I have cleaned up a couple of those light switches. They are heavy duty inside. A very simple set up to make everything work. Just change the bulbs.

OK, 12V conversion fine, charges great and 12V whips the starter much better. However, the carb started to spit gas then quit altogether. I have the carb off and soaking, kit should be here Thursday or Friday. Does anyone have a float/carb body setting? Would appreciate it, thanks
