I have a problem with my 1947 6v Farmall H. I have recently snapped the small spring-like band on the points in the distributor twice. It happened about a month ago and I chalked it up to a bad part. It just happened again while I was mowing. I figure I must have something set up wrong. This winter I did put a new 6v coil in it when it seemed like the coil died. Could the new coil be doing something to the points? It has seemed to be running a little hot/rough lately. I'll replace the points again but am looking for ideas...

Not sure but do you have a 12 volt coil? It might be trying to pull to much voltage/amperage and burning points? Again I am not sure but might be worth a shot.

This isn't the first time I've read about broken points recently.

I don't remember where I read it, but someone else was having a similar problem with the spring breaking... It happened on multiple sets of points.

Sounds to me like a poor quality part is to blame. Unfortunately no matter who you buy your points from, they're all made on the same assembly line in China. If they're from that same bad batch you're going to end up with a broken spring sooner or later. Just gotta keep replacing them until you find a good set.

Your tractor may be running rough and hot because the timing is slightly off with the new points.

2 thoughts,
1. did you get a coil for an IH or just an off the shelf automotive coil that might be 12V and is it hooked up correctly, being you have a positive ground tractor.
2. when you did all this, did you replace the condensor also or just the points???
