Leaking rear main on an H

I have a leaking rear main oil seal on my 1941 H. I want to get this fixed up as soon as possible but I am hoping that I don't need to split the tractor again. UGH! Can someone who has done this before tell me if I gotta split the tractor of if there is some trick to replacing the seal without splitting it. Thanks
 
The positive thing is that I haven't returned them to the owner since splitting the tractor earlier this month to put in a replacement input shaft to the transmission and a new clutch earlier this month. Seems like everything I do lately just has to be done multiple times.
 
Don't feel too bad Brad. I split my MD last winter to put a ring gear in and did the clutch and rear main "since I was in there." I put the upgraded seal retainer in and a new felt seal and it leaks terrible now and didn't really leak much before.
 
Sflem can I ask where you got the upgraded retainer and seal for the job? What did you do to fix it the second time?

I got the upgraded retainer from a friendly neighbor. On the MDs the retainer was white metal and on the 400/450 Ds it was steel. I still used the felt seal. Some say you can take the edges off the spiral groove and run the neoprene seal. I am not sure I am willing to risk that on an irreplacable crank.
 
A leaking rear seal is usually an indicator the main & thrust bearing on the crank are just begining to wear. I have seen them with just the retainer coming loose and that is usually very lucky.
Drop the pan & plastigauge your mains. Take a dial indicator reading of the front to back crank movement, if they are within specs, it's probably the rear main seal retainer.
But to replace either, you will have to split the tractor.
How much oil is it leaking?
Does it leak most when the tractor is running or sitting?
 
I haven't noticed if it leaks when it is running but it leaves a pretty good size puddle overnight when left inside on the concrete. There is not many hours on the rebuild of the engine and I have noticed that some of the bolts have loosened up on various other components on engine. My uncle did the work and he may have just not torqued the retainer bolts properly.
