PTO from 986 into a 1586

I am about to tackle a daunting task: I want to have a 540 rpm pto in my 1586, and the parts guy at the dealer says one from a 986 will fit. I got a friend who is junking out his 986, and so I have gotten the rights to the 540/1000 rpm pto from it. Question: Other than a lift on the end of a hoist on my other tractor, and a piece of pipe to fit over the end of one of the output shafts (for leverage), any thoughts on the amount of help I need to line up to get the pto out of the the 986 and into my 1586? (I of course will also be taking the old 1000 rpm pto out of my 1586, but I figure that either pto's removal would be similar.) Thanks.

You will find that the drive on the 15 is larger and different guys have different ways of adapting but it is done all the time. Also, if the 986 is early model it will have different linkage as early models pull valve up and over center lock, later, later are like the 15 that push valve in to engage and hydraulic lock internally.

Thank you so much. Could I email you for additional questions? I don't want to post every time I have some questions that wouldn't apply to most common situations. Thanks again, very much.

Thank you both for your encouragement. Now, for my follow-up question: can an "adaptor" be made at a machine shop, or rather, could the average shade tree mechanic make one himself? Thanks again to you both. I was about to believe it couldn't be done.
