M engine removal

Going into the M grave yard to pull a motor that should be fine (machine shop will confirm) for my tractor. Ive never done this before, im going to get a hoist tomorrow and pull it saturday or sunday.

Can I pull the motor without dropping the front bolster and side rails? Once all the bolts are removed does it slide right out? Do I have to remove the clutch or anything, like I said, ive never done this before so I appologize if im asking dumb questions...I did order the blue ribbon service manual which im told walks you through the whole thing but I value the experience of you gentlemen more...

Thanks for the help, Anthony

Let me tell what I learned the hard was a year ago pulling the engine out of my 450, which is almost identical mechanically to an M: It will be a LOT easier if you bring some help, and two, take you some 5/8 and 3/4 inch all thread with nuts and washers to go with them, plus a good hack saw. This will enable you to make bolts that you can screw into the sides of the front bolster, the side rails, and the bellhousing/frame of the tractor. No, you don't need to remove the clutch, but you do need some really good jack stands and heavy lumber to support the frame/bellhousing of the tractor when you are removing the engine, and yes, you really should remove the front bolster, and it is very heavy and thus dangerous, especially because it also holds up the rest of the tractor. Get some really good help and protect yourself from real harm. Good luck.

having her on a hard surface helps too... working in dirt or grass, etc just makes things that much more difficult. Something with a loader or forks helps a lot too...

You need to split the tractor at the bell housing, then remove at least one frame rail to get the engine out.

The engine cannot be lifted out the top of the engine bay like a W-6.

I split my Super M, removed the radiator, took the bolts out of the engine mounts and lifted it out with an engine hoist -- 0 problems.

how did you lift it out? Did you bolt a chain to the engine, if yes, where did you bolt it or what bolt holes should I use...if no, how did you do it?

I removed the head and used bolts and washers that fit the holes in the head -- less weight to move also. You need to adjust the chains so that it lifts more or less level. I merely stated what I did and that it is possible. It may be easier to remove one rail. However you do it be careful. The engine is heavy.
