706 pto reinstall

Ok, guys, What's the trick to reinstalling the pto unit on the 706 or its 06/66 relatives. I can't quite get it that last 1" or so. I believe the pto shaft coupler is not hitting the shaft dead center. It appears the main shaft inside the tractor has drooped slightly so I have it propped up 1/4" via the drain plug hole and a metal rod.
The tight fitting pto housing to frame prevents me moving it enough to feel the shaft coupling to properly stab the unit.
I was thinking about icing down the pto unit and heating the frame slightly to loosen the fit enough to install it.
There has to be an easier method. Thanks for the input.
 
Take the plate where the toplink pins off-6 bolts, reach in and guide the shaft with one hand while putting pto back with the other. Yes it does 'droop' when apart. I hope you have it hanging and not trying to man-handle it, a good way to get hurt.
 
Make sure that the shaft coupler is installed on the shaft so the part without the splines is facing to the back of the tractor. That way the PTO stub can get started before the splines are engaged. After the PTO shat starts into the coupler you can use a pipe wrench to turn the 1000 rpm shaft and override the brakes to get the splines to line up. Once that happens it should slide in the rest of the way.
 
I use a remote starter switch to bump the engine over while pushing in on the PTO unit. I rarely need to remove the top link cover to help with mating the splines.

I also coat the PTO bore in the rear frame with a little oil or grease. Always helps to slick 'er up a bit.
 
Its all back together now. I did remove the top link cover and it was much easier to align. The open top link hole also made a convenient spot to refill the HyTran. Works great now, but I still need to check/reset operating pressures. Thanks for the tips.
