You guys always have good advice so here goes.... The shop where my 48 H lives has a black snake, I have not been able to catch him and he startles me every once and a while. Any advice on a snake trap.

I would learn to love him and he is returning the feeling by eating rodents etc. I know it is tough to do, but best. Jim

Leave him alone, and get used to seeing him, so your not so startled. He is working for you, and if he is still in the shed, then the mice are still present, and his job is not over! He will leave when no more food is present.

Well if you remove it you will find you make big problems for your self since mice love to eat the wiring on a tractor and with him there you do not have the mice. If I where you I would learn to live with him there. Plus you will not have the snakes there that you do not want because a black snake will eat copper heads

I know you can never convince yourself when startled but he can not hurt you and as others have said he is eating mice and other vermin. Black racers are much too fast to just catch, but if you can get a noose over his head (you can't) you could relocate him. I have had relocated snakes come back and eat chicks from the same pin I where I first caught them.

Okay guys, if Janicholson says we should be buddies I will try. I know he cannot hurt me but he sure scares me when I reach to get something off of the shelf and he is there. Like so many things in life the things we fear the most never happen.

What kind of snake is it? The only big black snake we have here in WI is a Black Rat Snake. There may be other, but I don't know them. We have the luxury of having "no" poison snakes so I don't worry about them too much. We do have rattlers but they are only in about 3 spots where our lovely DNR has reintroduced them.

On the tractor talk forum, Jacks mentions that he has copperheads in his shop. That is bad and dangerous.

Get rid of it. They eat rabbits and squirrels too. Every fall I have to buy rat and mouse poisons and we have several black snakes around. They are just a pest also and I will get rid of everyone I see.

Tucker, I caught the copperhead in my shop using a glueboard from tractor supply meant to catch rats. If you trap him and want to release him somewhere else, you pour vegetable oil on the glueboard. With a black snake you will have to tie, nail, or screw the glueboard down so that the snake can't drag it off. Also, bites from non poisonous snakes can be a serious health threat. I had a cat that killed lots of snakes. A non poisonous snake that he killed also killed him with a bite that was very minor. Later a vet told me that the bacteria that snakes harbor can cause a fatal nervous system infection if not treated by antibiotics. Best wishes with your problem- jack
