IH 444 Questions

brackens

New User
I just bought an IH 444 and it seems to be in excellent condition. I need to do a couple of things however. I need to get the exhaust converted from underneath to a stack. Can I just flip the manifold and order a stack? Second, why, if my emergency brake works ok, would my brakes not work that great from the pedal? Are brakes tough to work on? Finally, I am trying to find a ROPS and I am having trouble. Any help would be awesome. Thanks all.

I put a lot of hours on a 444 with underslung exhaust, and don't understand the problem. Unless it is working on rear mounted implements with the engine running. You have to put a hole in the hood. The parts book will have the right manifold, not saying it's still available. There are ROPS for the 444, but I don't remember where as I didn't install it. As far as stability and safety without a ROPS the 444 is about as safe as they come for an older tractor. Very stable and manueverable. A small amount of common sense will keep it from rolling. The parking brake works because the tractor is not moving, thus less inertia.

1) If you work where there is long dry grass there is a fire danger with an underslung exhaust 2) If you are working in the mountains on logging roads bucking logs and grading roads a rops is necessary, period. 3) The parking brake works better even when the tractor is moving. Maybe it is just that you can put more pressure with the hand lever.

Thanks for the comments.

I just put a upright exhaust manifold on my 444 gas, bought it from Wengers of Meyerstown PA think it was about $129 plus shipping

Sorry, I think of tractors as farm equipment. I have started small fires with the muffler on a pickup equipped with a soil probe. A couple of times, I just stomped them out, except that I almost lost one. Hard to do that in your situation.
