smoking H engine

My "41H is smoking intermittently. It"ll warm up fine, start down the road (under load or not) with no smoke, then suddenly start smoking excessively. After a few minutes, the smoke goes away and all is good for a few more minutes. Then its starts all over.

I"m thinking the problem is worn valve guides, not oil bypassing the piston rings. Before I start tearing into the motor, I"d appreciate any opinions or insight into what the problem might be.

More info needed so we can help you help your self... Is the smoke a blue sort of smoke that smells of burned oil or is it more of a black smoke that may smell like gas??? If black then first off when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner?? You could also have some rust/dirt floating around in the carb making so the float needle does not close like it should all the time and that will make it run way rich. If a blue type smoke that could be a valve sticking or a sticking ring. I would pour about a quart of ATF into 3 gal of gas and run it that way and that should lube up the rings and valves

That is, in my opinion, the answer. PC style seals (or even umbrells style) can be installed easily with out removing the head (if the existing valve guides are sized for the PC seals).
Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods, keeping them in numeric order.
Remove spark plugs.
Using a piece of 1/4" cotton rope about 2 foot long, push all but 4 inches into #1 cylinder. Using the crank (never the starter motor) or the rear wheel when in high gear, compress the rope into the valves so they stay up. Remove the keepers/retainers, and springs, put on seals, Refit parts.
Repaet 3 more times.
Best of luck, Jim.

It does not sound like rings to me, and sounds like oil is filling up somewhere and running down the valve guides or breather, have you pulled the rocker arm cover and looked for gunk.

I pulled the pushrod cover and the breather element and sheet metal cover were packed solid. I'll also be dropping the oil pan as I saw more sludge that I'm comfortable seeing.
