Super MTA Diesel vs Super MD-TA

They are different ways to abbreviate the name of the same tractor. The M and MD became the Super M and Super MD(SM and SMD) and then they came out with the SMTA and SMDTA or SMTAD. I am not sure which way it was written on the decals or owners manuals of the time.

The TA was an option on Farmalls. If it had no TA it had a set of Decals that had SM TA Diesel in a circle with No Wing extending rearward with Torque Amplifier in it. If it was TA equipped, It had the wing. I believe the SMTA was a Model designation with or without the TA. Jim

it was same decal for both gas and diesel. the diesel model had the word "diesel" added to the decal set, which went on the fuel tank. there is no "d" in the decal.

A SMTA without a torque is just a Super M and would have a regular SM decal, diesel or gas. The TA stands for torque amplifier.

With respect, they were SMTA with or without the TA!!
With TA they had the Flag banner on the circle decal with Torque Amplifier on it (and Diesel on the side)
With no ta they had a circle only with SM TA on it with no banner. Jim

(quoted from post at 15:32:28 07/22/12) jim, with respect the torque was standard equipment but the tractor could be ordered with t/a delete for $100 less.

But they still were SMTAs just didn't have the "wings" on the logo. I have seen it in real life.

I got to thinking...I have seen a lot of things in life. That doesn't mean they are always correct... (I never saw this in real life, but I did save the pictures)

(quoted from post at 03:50:16 07/23/12) So your saying my 53 super m with a super m decals is really a smta with the incorrect decals?

No. It is a 1953 Super M with the correct decals. There was no such thing as an SMTA in 1953.

The "SMTA without wings" decal is only correct on a 1954 TA-delete model with a serial number of 60001 or above.

The difference between Super MTA Diesel and Super MD-TA is:

The TA was installed before the diesel engine on a Super MTA Diesel.

The diesel engine was installed before the TA on a Super MD-TA.

(Yes, I am JOKING)

That's what I call a morphidite tractor. Some one, other than IH, did a nice job of piecing 2 or more tractors together. As long as they don't try to pass it off as a "factory original" I have no problem with it. Unfortunately, too many times you see people trying to sell these at ridiculously high prices to uninformed buyers.

Talk about a morphidite tractor. Here's "the only one known to exist" Super B TA, LOL. Looks like part H, 300 and what engine? Has a TA but no IPTO. Bet it turns so short it goes backwards!
