ih504 battery dead....im a newbie...where do i start

Thanks for reading. I bought a 504 battery was dead. Put a new one in but bouht it from auto zone, it was a normal 12 volt battery. later i learned its a 6 vokt system. is it ok to have 12 volt car battery? If thats ok, where do i start trouble shooting charging issues? I just dont know where to begin. A general game plan woukd be great! is there a shop manual tgat would have stuff like this?

Caseih.com has parts diagrams for Farmalls. It shows all 504 tractors to be 12 volt. Later tractors were alternator equipped, and earlier were generator equipped. (IIRC they were all negative ground, but that needs confirmation.
If yours is a generator (long 3.5" cylinder with a step in the non drive end) then we should be able to diagnose it. If it an alternator, we will also be able to help, but entirly different methods are needed. Let us know. Jim

I dont know! i checked the lights and it onky had 6 vokts going to it. i feel dumb! i thought all those old generators were on 6 volt systems!

Ok..now i really feel dumb. took a look at what i thought was generator. maybe its an akternator. has delco remy tag on it that says 12 volt! how do i learn if its an alternator or generator. Shoukd i just take it off and try to get it tested at auto zone?
