Bolt Question

I was torquing the bolts on the connecting rods for my '44H (I was taking a plastiguage reading)and one of the bolts snapped off in the thread. I already have a new connecting rod on its way here, but I've decided to replace all the bolts to be safe. Should I use grade 8 bolts? If not, what do you recommend? Also, the originals had the tab/washer that bends up to keep the bolts from spinning free - where can I get some of those, or would I be just as safe to use Loctite or a lock washer? Thanks for your help.

Jim give Ken Updike at Carter & Gruenewald a call on both the bolts and those bend over locks. 608-455-2411.

Jim on an additional note, was the block opened to weather? I have never seen a remark about a connecting rod bolt head shearing.

fastenal will have your bolts you need in grade eight. if you buy them from ih you will have to mortgage your firstborn. i don't use the bend over locking tabs. your new car doeesn't have them it that motor runs three times faster than your h does. never use a lock washer they can break and fall out. you don't need any locktite with the proper torque the bolt is streched a little and the tension holds it from working out. ps a good mechanic will always use new rod bolts.

The block was covered, but water had gotten into the cylinder through an open exhaust valve. The piston was stuck to the cylinder wall bad enough that when I pounded it out, the top lip of the sleeve broke and the sleeve came out with the piston. Some water had made its way down the connecting rod (the same rod with the sheared bolt).

ARP. They are expensive but if you need a good bolt ARP is the best! I have ARP rod bolts, clutch bolts, intake/header bolts, and rocker arm studs in my custom built I6 ford. Rod bolts are a tight fit and may need machined.

The IH/Case dealer in Michigan wanted $18 each for the bolts, Carter & Gruenewald wanted $13 each, I got them from Fastenal for .68 each.

How do you know they are the same bolts?
