Carb/float adjustment question

Putting a carb kit in my M, instructions say set the float at 1 5/15" from the casting to the farthest point of the float (straight down im guessing)...How do you do this?

The kit also has some felt packing, where does that go?

thanks, Anthony

I use a dial caliper - set it to the right height, lock it in place, and use the little end that sticks out at the bottom to measure depth. Stick that end on the face of the carb and move it around checking the height of the floats against the bottom frame of the caliper -

... easier done than said.

I never use the felt packing - but somebody here suggested craming it in the weep hole at the bottom of the carb as a filter. Not a bad idea -I've never tried it though.

A good kit has the instructions that show you where and how to set the float and also come with a card board part that has the measurement on it to do just that. Also a good kit shows you each and every part like that felt washer. If I remember right that goes on the throttle shaft but been a few years since I did a M carb

That fuzzy little round piece of felt is not a packing. It is meant to be a dust seal for the throttle shaft because somebody doesn't know the throttle shaft on an M carb is not the same as the throttle shaft on an 8n Ford. The only good use I've found for that piece of felt on a Farmall carb is as a filter in the drain hole in the bottom of the carb, but just one of those felt gizmos is not enough. It takes 2 to do it right.

Basically, you can do whatever you want with that felt. It really shouldn't have been in the kit to start with.
