Aftermarket brakes on H

I am installing new brake bands on my H today. They are aftermarket as many parts are these days. They do fit but drag on the drum when wheel is turned. Is this OK, or does some material need to be taken off the lining? Don't want them to run hot. Any advice appreciated.

If they drag only on the top of the drum, you need to adjust that set screw device at the bottom of the brake cover. That is what that device is for.

If the new band is dragging all the way around, you have then adjusted up to tight.

If the deag is enough that you cannot move it by hand pressure applied to the drum, I would say it is too tight. If it is turnable by hand it will probably wear in well. It should not be noticable when driving the tractor. In other words the tractor should freely coast on flat ground if the clutch is pushed in. If it feels at all like it is pulling to one side, or if the tractor slows noticably they need to be looser. After driving it for 15 minutes not using the brakes much if at all, the covers should be cold.

To fit them (assumes all adjustment is extended) the band will need to be sanded thinner. a drum sander can be used, or hand sanding (protect yourself from inhaling dust). I would use a thin permanent marker to make a grid on the friction surface at 2" intervals, then sand till they are either uniformly thinner, or gone. This helps reduce the possibility of un even sanding. Jim

The brake cover isn't on yet. The brake lining fits snuggly around the drum, but not so tight that you can't turn the wheel. There will be no room to make the set screw adjustment until the brake gets some wear on it. I tried actuating the brake by turning the cam with a pipe wrench (gently) and it seemed to work as it should. I guess my question is: Is this OK or is it too tight?

I'll try your suggestion with the hand pressure. I've got a little flat ground around here...might try driving it around w/o brake covers to see how it acts. Looks to me like very little sanding will be required. Great suggestion on the magic marker.
