I currently have a 454 that I picked up last year for a great price. Did a little work to it and have used it some for mowing. It has worked well however it is a little rough looking. Local fellow was interested in buying it at a price that would net me a nice profit and there is a 684 with 3800 hours for sale pretty close to me. It is a late 84 series with the improved h pattern shifter. Has been painted and seems pretty decent.
My question is about the durability of the four cylinder diesel in the 684 vs the d179, fuel useage, cold starting, etc. The 454 starts and runs great and has just enough power to run my six foot bush hog. 684 would do the same job a little easier I suppose and the sheet metal, etc is very good. Tire condition is similar.
Is the 684 just as good, only bigger? Both tractors share the same rear end, park brake issues, etc and physical size difference isn't a concern to me.[/list]
