2544 HYDRO slipping in high range!!!

just bought this tractor and it runs great in low bushhogging, but noticed after warmed up good it will not pull itself up a slight hill in high when i was done. go back to low and it works. tried it in reverse high and its strong as an ox. i just replaced the fluid and switched the check valves around and checked the high pressure lines for cracks and found none. tried again, and nothing has changed. ive been told since its still strong in reverse it shouldnt be a serious problem. problem is just finding the issue. any ideas?

Did you swap the checks or the regulators? I'd swap out both, side to side, and the "problem" should then change to reverse.

If not, ya might have some plate slippage going on. But if that were the case, you really should be having an issue in reverse as well as forward.

i swapped out the check valves. no change. i just swapped the short line inside for a known good one a guy in town had to see if it was cracked and no change. i have not swapped the valves that the lines go to yet. i really should have i guess, but ive already been in twice, whats one more time? :) if that doesnt show anything, i guess im screwed. i have the ability to tear it down and fix it, but for the money that the parts cost ive heard, it just wouldnt be worth it.unless theres something else it could be thats not too serious.

Check the foot-n-inch pedal adjustment..I have a 656 hydro that had a similar problem and the issue turned out to be this adjustment...just a suggestion...Good luck..LOTS of great people in here that can help you..certainly many that can help you isolate the problem

well, i have capped the main lines off and the problem is still there, so that takes that out of the equation as i understand it... its not lookin so good on my end. i cant believe the guy flat out lied and said the trans was strong.

havent really tried that but should it with it being a diesel?i have tried the same hill it wont climb forward in reverse and pulled it all the way in rev and the motor cuts back and it digs up the hill no problem.its never had any issue going backwards since ive bought it.

check charge pressure and servo pressure when in high range. low charge press. could be weak charge pump or scored valve plates. low servo press. could effect motor servo.

Yeah,

If the thing digs like a badger in reverse, I still think you have issues with those regulators, checks, or pipes. You can't tell they are bad by looking at 'em.

HOWEVER, when they are bad, you will usually have the problem in forward low range also.

Furtherm, and the trouble is, if ya replace 'em all, it'll set ya back a grand and still might not be the whole story.

If you can just get that problem to reverse directions, then you've got a handle on it.

Can you feel it "shudder" as you're trying to climb the hill in forward, hi?

Allan

yeah, i know the shudder. i can feel it trying in forward high. and you really can tell its not right in forward low when its hot. it still works, but its a little more sluggish when hot. i juts finished switching relief valves but havent tried it yet. not sure if that will show anything yet till the morning

well, i did switch relief valves havent worked it real hard and long yet to make a for sure call, but it hasnt slipped in forward yet on the same hills it did before, but it now wont pull it in reverse so thats a relief. looks like i can just replace the forward valve and it should work. and no, you cant tell theyre bad by their looks. that is truth cause it looks no different than the other one.
