I finally have the PTO out of the 706. I've not had one apart before. What are the most common causes of failure (it worked fine then would not engage when restarted). The fluid was overfull, linkage is intact (no broken pin), suction tube is intact.

Note that I can move the clutch plates back and forth with my fingers(normal?). Just trying to rule out the simple things first...

Thanks.

Ah did you remove the valve from the TOP or Bottom ????? If you took it out the top you still have no idea if the tiny little pin is broke. The valve comes out the bottom . and if you have a two piece valve in your hand the pin is broken. If this is not the case then it is time to remove the four bolts holding the input housing to the main part of the PTO and remove the snap ring that hold the clutch pac together . Then start to remove the disc's and plates and lay them out as they come out so you have and idea as to how to put them back in. This is as far as you can go with out a way of compressing the heavy spring to go deeper into the unit . The next thing that maybe wrong is that ya had a bearing failure and allowed the hub and drum to wallow out the housing and cause a massive pressure drop where the two Teflon seals ride. and here again you will need to have a spring compressor to remove the heavy return spring to get the hub and drum out .Oh and that spring is LONG.

Well if your would have paid more attention to my earlier post you would not have pulled the unit . and if the valve came out the top the pin is broke . BUT since ya got it this far out now would be to put a new clutch pack in it and order the test fitting and a gauge so you can adjust the pressure . as back in the archives i posted the Case I H part # for the fitting and when you get it you will have to make up a Hdy hose with the correct JIC fitting and what ever the gauge needs.

Yeah but I like getting greasy...

Seriously, it looked like I had to pull it due to the 3 pt linkage preventing the valve from coming out the bottom.
I have to order a gasket set anyway, and it appears to only be slightly more $$ for the whole PTO clutch pack set, will probably go that route.

Ya can not replace any gskt's other then the one for the unit to frame with out taking the return spring out and ya can not change the rear seal with out taking the whole deal apart. Takes me about three hours from time i drain the oil till it is back in the tractor , BUT i have everything i need to do the job.
