Farmall 300 TA input shaft coupler

I didn't get a good look when I took it apart and there is not a diagram in my I&T manual that shows the coupler. I have tried it both ways and it seems to fit either way but there must be some reason why one end is tapered and the other end has a section with no splines. I can get a picture tomorrow if that would help. Can anyone tell me which end goes toward the TA and which toward the IPTO gear? Thank you very much.

Tapered end toward 7 inch clutch. You will notice that one way the input shaft from main clutch will not go on as far. That is the wrong way. First TA job I ever did in about 1959 I put it in wrong and when tractor was assembled the 7 inch disc was held tight up against the pressure plate so of course the TA would not down shift to the low side. Another thing, some did not have a snap ring inside of them and then it can work back and hold the 7 inch disc partially engaged when driving in TA and burn that clutch out real quick.

Tapered end to t/a clutch plate. Newer couplings used a snap ring inside the spines to keep the coupling from sliding back to the clutch plate. Zach if you want a good shifting tractor bolt the t/a clutch in the carrier and set the finger height to specs before installing.
