Converting A to AV

Hi,

I am looking for an AV tractor, but they seem hard to find. Can I convert the A to an AV with some front extensions and new back tires? Need the high ground clearance for vegetable crops. Do the AV's come up for sale very often?

Thanks,

They come up for sale in Calif quite often but are pricey. Finding the cults for one will be the hardest. Thers not that much difference in the height and the regular A in most crops would do the job as when the crop gets 24in tall you wouldnt be using it.

Tall enough tires on the rear to gain 6 inches of clearance will step up the ground speed radically. The A goes pretty fast as it is. I think you need a Super C it has immense clearance, and a trike front. Jim

this one is on e-bay

Get an F20 with 36 inch rear tires. You get 3 feet of clearance with the drawbar off and probably cheaper than an A or AV.

If you can't find a complete tractor I don't think you'll find the parts to convert one, especially since it sounds like you need it RIGHT NOW.

The main difference is 36" tires on back, and taller knees up front for clearance on the tractor.

I think, though, that standard cultivators will hit the larger rear wheels before they reach the ground, and besides, none of this gives you an inch more clearance on the toolbars...

The height of the SA front axle and the rear axle housing of the C are within 1/2 inch of each other -- 23" +/-. The lower drop axle housing on the A/B, depending on row width/tread setting gives the edge to the C. I grew up on a vegetable farm in south Texas, cultivating tractors were H's and B's. I don't remember a clearance problem. The axle clearance is a non factor anyway. The vegetable cultivators we had, had the feet/sweeps attached to bars that were at least as long as the wheels were wide. Much taller than the cultivator bars, if we cultivated we also cut the roots of the crop.

Hi,

Yes that is what is confusing me about these tractors. The John Deere 900hc has plows that come down from either side, there is no bar running across the belly. If the plows run on a bar across the belly it pretty much ruins its ability to cultivate for me.

The 900HC is a whole different tractor. Granted it is a high crop, but it is 40 years newer and will run about $15,000. It stands to reason that high crop tooling has come a long way in 40 years.

there is an AV on craigslist in lafayette louisiana right now for 3500 with cultivator frames. you will almost definately move way too fast if you just add bigger tires to an A. You'll lose a noticable amount of power too. There was also a 1066 high crop but it didn't look like it was in good shape.
