Got back to tinkering with the H today as it has cooled up some after the rain. Took out the shift lever and rebuilt it as it was worn to almost a point. Thought that might help the popping out of high gear, no such luck. It did make shifting a lot more crisp with no slop.

Hate to pull the top off the transmission but guess there is no other way to fix the problem.Just how big a job am I getting in to other than that heavy cast iron slab on top? Is that a common H problem? Thanks Joe

It could be that the splines are worn that engage for 5th gear or it could be that the detent ball is missing or the spring is broken, which would be much cheaper fixes. You may want to start by dropping the belly pump and removing the input shaft, U joint and upper constant mesh gear assembly. This would give you a chance to look at the gears that make 5th and see what kind of shape they are in. The top cover is not too bad of a job, just remove the belt pulley drive if so equipped, the gas tank, the seat, unbolt the steering column from the top cover and hoist the whole thing up a bit in the air if you don't want to have to disconnect everything. The top cover is not that heavy, maybe 100 pounds at a guess. If it sticks try tapping in hardwood wedges in the crack between the rear casting and the cover, try not to whack the "ears" of the top cover too much with a hammer as they will break off pretty easily.

Zach nailed it. The only other thing it could be is the bearing on the top shaft. That was not the problem on mine, but the other three things were a problem on my H. Fairly common. I did break the ear off my lid, but I had an extra problem because one of the bolts broke off and that made the lid tougher to get off on that corner. It's welded back on and I will flap disc it someday to try an hide it. Oh well.

Check out my photobucket site. You can see how I did my H. I took everything off. I also had bad outer axle bearings so I pulled the axles and took the rear end right down to nothing. I did it 3 years ago and in gaskets, seals, bearings, used 4th/5th gear, and springs I had $900 into my rear end. Those outer axle bearings were $125 each.
