Started H tonite...went crazy (the tractor that is)

Finally started H tonite....new aftermarket gas line leaks at both ends.....had throttle handle set just slightly above idle.....finally started and ran wide, wide open...fortunately was able to shut down by grounding mag with a wire I had attached to it. Throttle handle goes past notches at the idle end, but will only go about half way up notch travel. I'm stuck on this one. Don't know how to adjust and have no knowledge of governors. Any ideas welcome. Will not (obviously) be running tractor until this is solved.

did you have the carb off at some point? be sure the rod from the governor to the carb is lined up correctly, if not it will run wild.

Yes carb was off to clean up. Checked gov linkage to carb twice and thought it was OK, but maybe not. Any way of telling whether or not tab from gov is in notch in carb after bolting back together?

Not really and that is probably your problem unless you also distrubed the throttle or governor control linkages somewhere other then at the carb. You just have to make sure they are properly engaged together as you reassemble back with the carb. A very common problem once the carb has been removed and we have all learned through this same exercise you are doing, good luck, Hal.

You definitely don't have the tab and notches aligned properly. The fact that the throttle handle doesn't move in its proper range is proof positive of that.

It sounds like you have the tab "below" the notches. That's why you can move the handle too far below idle (the carburetor is not stopping you at all). That's why you can only move the handle half way up (the carburetor has been pushed full open by this point).

Bruce, You do not have the tab on the governer aligned with the slot in the carb. Do you know what we are talking about? It is kind of tricky getting these aligned and back together without something moving and missing the slot. I have done this a hundred times but a year or two ago I had the carb off my M for something and when I put it back on it wanted to run wild. I was sure I had everything aligned but I think I had it off and on about three or four times before I got it. Be patient and keep trying you will get it.
