H water jacket cover gasket

I blew the water jacket cover gasket today while baling, I pulled the cover and it is very rough but I have a nice spare one off a parts tractor. I went to look at gaskets for sale and in the sets I saw it looked like the gaskets were made out of the same type of rubberized cork material as oil pan and valve cover gaskets. I have a sheet of that material and I could cut out a gasket tonight if that will be suitable. If so should I seal it with copper coat or any other type of sealant or put it on dry? Any advice will be much appreciated.

seal it with permatex high-tack spray. thats what its for and thats the only thing that i use. its sticky enough to hold the gst. in place and does not harden so its easily removable. works excellent on cork also as it will soak it and give a very good seal. get it at napa.

I have recently found a new gasket maker it is called "the right stuff" it replaces using a traditional gasket that you have to cut or buy. You just spread it out in a nice steady bead and put it on. You can put fluid back in as soon as 1 minute. I have used it on my tractors oil pan, valve cover, water cover, and many more. Have never had a single leak. You can only get this at Napa auto parts and it is around 13 dollars but is sure easier to use and you dont need to use gaskets made out of cork or any other material it replaces it all. Good luck!
