w6 hub removal

hook another tractor to it and give it some short jerks to get it moving. remember safety first. a puller on that kind of big chunk of iron dont do much unless its already worn out and loose. i presume your talking rear hub. and if the hub was off it could be put in a big hyd. press to remove axle. on assembly use some copper coat or never seize on splines.

I have pondered building a puller. I think you could take a 2x2 square tube and put it on the axle. Then weld a 2x2 (?) cross pipe on to make a T. Drill two holes though there and use all thread or BIG, LONG bolts to pull the hub off the axle.

I am also pondering leaving my hubs on and taking my chances with oil leaks from the axle seals...

(quoted from post at 10:29:27 07/11/12) From what ive heard you need a huge press to remove them.

I've heard that, too. Part of it might be because the hub won't fit in the press. I've heard a W-4 takes a big press, a W-6 takes a huge press, and a W-9 is impossible.

Good luck. I have tried everything listed and a few more on a W9. Its been 3 years and I am still trying. They can be a bear.

gcnehring--you are using the same method that I have used on a Super W-6. I used a 20 ton hydraulic jack positioned sideways and pressing on the axle with the jack chained to the cast wheel hub through the triangle openings. I had all the pressure that jack could give, used rust penetrant and a sledge hammer to jar it loose. I took a go at it periodically over 3 days, finally it started to move. Patience and brute force got the job done. I remember my Dad telling me years ago that he had a Super WD-6 with a bad bearing and the axle was stuck so bad it had to be pressed out of the hub (Long before my time).

So should I just leave well enough alone on my WD-9? I didn't see major leaking by the axle seals and the bearing are tight. I was just going to take them off to replace the seals "just in case" they leaked.

I resently had done this. What worked for me was to use and old pto cover fill it full of charcoal. Lite it and let it cook it should last serveral hrs. As it cools with a jack it should pop. Best of luck
