Hi all,

This is my first post and I'm a tractor novice, so go easy on me! I'm using a Farmall A with cultivators on an exhaust lift system for cultivating vegetables. The cultivators have been raising very slowly, if at all, and if they do raise up they sink back down after a few seconds. The lift valve (I believe) was leaking a odorless brown fluid out of a hole where a grease zerk must have popped out, so I replaced it, but that didn't fix the problem. It looked as if only a couple of tablespoons of the brown fluid (hydraulic fluid?) had leaked out.

Any ideas on what the problem is and/or if there's a somewhat manageable fix? Even if I could get some ideas of what's wrong that would help me communicate with the Case dealership.

Thank you!

My father worked for Ihc in a small town in west Ontario Canada [ near Sarnia, across from Port Huron Mich.]. Had a pneumatic lift all one of our tractors. His spring ritual, before setting up the scuffler - cultivators; since they were always stored in the shed over winter; was to disassemble the large lift cylinder clean it take the leather ring at the bottom of the cylinder rod and soak it in motor oil for several days, then reassemble. It always worked first time when he did this; otherwise OUCH!
The other advise you have received from the others is note worthy,
Happy scuffling.
Wm.
too.
By the way I have parts for a B/BN cultivator if any one is interested for sale.

To be fair to the OP, you weren't leaking any IMPORTANT fluids.

Whatever the "odorless brown liquid" is, it has NOTHING to do with the operation of the exhaust lift. It's a pneumatic system (air powered), not hydraulic (oil powered).

It was one of two things:

1. Grease spooge, from old gun grease that had liquified/separated.

2. Rusty brown water from condensation.

Either one, has nothing to do with the proper operation of the lift.

First the valve on the manifold is the pressure valve the one by the filter is the control valve so we can talk about the system keeping things straight. There is a pipe plug in the bottom of the control valve remove that to let the condensation junk drain. Grease the two fittings then just a little. There is a rubber washer in that valve that need to be replaced. part#15214E Control valve seat. Gasket is part#15217E. Those parts will keep the lift from coming back down. In the cycl is a piston cup part#15184 it is probably bad thats why it doesent lift good. The pressure valve on the manifold has a flopper that seats and diverts the exhaust thru the control valve to the cycl. I dont think those are availabel but your dealer mite know where to get one. I make them out of leather and can send you one. You mite want to call me 319-430-3907 i live in Iowa central daylitetime. these systems work well if kept in shape and not letting tractor out in the rain letting the pressure valve get rusty. I have been using them since 1948 repair and so forth for users all over and will be glad to help you get yours working .

Gene Bender will get on eventually and solve your problem. He's the exhaust lift expert. I can tell you that you have a leaking seal somewhere. I can also assure you that you aren't leaking any fluids since there aren't any in the system. I have one too. The fluid that you mention is just water/rust/grease. The water comes from the compresed air/exhaust. Nothing you can do about it, just keep everything oiled and plan ahead for freezing in the winter time.
