Darryl 2 M's

Bought an M with loose shifter.Had a 3/8 bolt instead of a shifter hold down pin. Was jumping out of gear but i could fix it by shutting off and reinstalling shifter. Now its stuck in reverese.when i try 2 put in another gear it's like I'm in 2 gears at once! Any idea's guy's? Really don't want to pull it all apart right now. We all know where THAT leads! Total resto! Don't have the time right now. Need the M to pull hay wagons! thanks guys...

thats a quick fix, just remove that 3/8 bolt and remove shifter. then get a cat bar or long screw driver and line up the 3 slots with each other. you will see one shift rail out of whack. your shifter end is worn out and needs rebuilding. some one on her has the spec's.

pull the shifter out and take a long screw driver and use it to take out of gear then build up the shifter with a little welding

The 3/8 bolt is too small and will allow play in the shifter so it can jump out of the rails plus the holes are probably wallowed out. The pin is supposed to be 7/16 inch diameter. The problem is either the pin and swivel system, or the end of the shifter being worn where it fits in the shifter rails. There is a fix for the pins on E bay that works really well. It's called the sloppy shifter fix. It includes all you need to fix the pins and swivels in the top of the shifter mechanism. I bought one a few months back. The cost was $20 includiing shipping and it works great.

Thanks Uncle Henry. Someone already did a little welding on the shifter, and the slots in the rails need some attention when I finally do get the big cover off. I was thinking of jacking up the rear, get the wheels off the ground, and push in the clutch while I play with the long screwdriver. Already tried it in the field but no luck. Maybe with all the pressure off things will slide into place easier. Thanks again... Darryl

Thanks Rust red. Yes I looked inside and I see the first/ reverse rail is pushed forward. Slots are worn. I tried in the field to push on it but it wouldn't move. Next I'll try jacking up the rear wheels and block up the clutch. Try to take pressure off everything. Hopefully that will work. thanks for your help. Cant wait to do a restoration on these 2 beautys.
