MD engine problems

I am thinking that I have a cracked head on my MD. I seem to have antifreeze in the oil pan after letting it sit for a few weeks. Also my radiator is low and it shows no signs of oil in it. Am I correct or could it just be a head gasket and that would solve all my problems? A guy can hope for the best right?

My head gasket leaked and my head was fine. Mine was totally different sypmtoms though. It was only leaking on the RF corner and not mixing oil and antifreeze. Get ready for sticker shock when you go to buy the head gasket/valve grind set!!!

I just stained "your" trailer and bolted a bunch of boards down. Should be good for another 10 years!

I actually have a head gasket and manifold gaskets in the shop. Just don't have the extra cash laying around to do the head complete at the moment and would prefer not to have it completely torn apart in the corner for however long it will take to round up 2K to redo the top end the way I want.

Is the top end that bad? Ring it and run it. These diesels are crazy forgiving from what I have seen. I got my head done for under $300 down in Janesville at Pakes Engine & Machine. That was no valves and no seats.

Brad, I bought a used MD back in about 1966. A couple of years later, after a very cold winter (over 25 below), I had anti-freeze in a cylinder when I started it up in spring. Ever since then I drain the block before winter and re-fill it in spring. Been doing this for 40+ years and never had a leak since. I probably put over 2,000 hrs on it over the last 45 years. Don't use it much any more but it still runs as nice as it did in 1966. Meter shows about 7,500 hrs, and as far I know, it has never had the head off. But I never pulled it when cold or shut it down when hot. I suspect the gasket or head contracts when 25 below to allow some anti-freeze to leak. But if yours leaked in warm weather, probably not your prblem. Al

Back in 1996 or so we put in new sleeves, pistons, rod and main bearings. The valves were pretty rough but at the time we could not locate replacement ones. I have since found a better network for parts but am finding out that parts are extremly expensive for that engine. If I end up taking it apart I am thinking about doing new valves (all 12), guides, seats, and springs. Depending on how the bottom edge looks as well it may just end up as a complete overhaul and do it correct and then just use it in shows and parades. The engine probaly has 1500 or so hours on it after the rebuild and ALOT of tractor pulling hours.
