544 gas engine

I need a 200 cubic inch gas motor for a 544. I was just wondering if a 574 gas engine will fit or any other engine even a diesel if it would work. Does any one have an engine laying around that they would sell. This is a farmall 544. Thanks Erik..

International or Farmall may make a difference with a 544. I know the rear ends are different and with some other models the engine blocks are different betwenn IH and Farmall. Maybe you want to upgrade to more power? I'm pretty sure a 544gasoline Farmall is the same as a 656 other than the number of cylinders, so a 460 or 560 would also be a good engine source. If you have a utility, you may have to look to utility models and the only one I can think of with enough power would be a 6 cylinder from a 460 International. The 504 uses a c-153 which is a super c engine on steroids and there will be some control linkage differences.
As to Doncaster built tractors, not sure on interchangeability of engines with USA designed and built rear ends.
Diesels will get more complicated with control linkages, plumbing, etc.
I always wanted to build a super duper HTA mating an H engine to a 544 or 656 back end--I think the belhousings and engines will mate. There would be linkage and plumbing complications there too.
How much work do you want this to be? It will be some research--I'm not an expert. It will also be a lot of engineering if you don't choose a bolt together option. Good luck

I thought of a 656 engine it would bolt up ok but the engine is about 6 inches longer and that would mean changing the hood and the side rails other than that it should fit. Thanks for the help Karl.

Erik, are you sure the frame rails aren't the same?Of the images of a 504 i've seen, the gap between the radiator and front of the engine is pretty significant--the fan blade requires a spacer. maybe a 544 would be just as spacious? I know a 656 uses all the space available as I actually have one. alternate engines mean lots of parts book research and salvage yard or tractor show measuring.

Hey Carl i have a 656 also and i know its longer and the 666 and 686 are longer than the 656. I always thought like you but now that i have one of each i can really see the differece

Erik, glad you have some reference tractors there. Mainly commenting to draw attention to your post from the experts. the 504 fan spacer I mentioned might just be a sign of how small the c-153and the little diesel blocks are...

good luck

Yeh Carl that 153 they say is just about the same as a super A engine only a little more beeft up. What do you use your 656 for is it a show tractor or do you use it for farming?

The C200 is basically the C301 with two cylinders lopped off. Sleeveless, which is why you need a new engine, right?

Yeah, the 656 and 544 are pretty much the same from the bell housing back, but in front they're very different. The 656 engine won't bolt up without different frame rails, different hood.

An interesting conversion might be a Cummins 4BT, the little 3.9L 4-cylinder diesel. You can find them in old delivery trucks pretty cheap. It would turn that 544 into a real tractor!

Yeh that would be nice ,i have thought about that many times, do you think it can be done resonably or are we talking money pit.
