Another valve adjustment question

My hand crank does not work (the part that the hand crank attaches to is rusting away to nothing and the pin/slot is is gone), how can i get the cylindars to TDC without the hand crank? thanks for the help, Anthony

try scotching the tractor, remove spark plugs, place tractor in neutral, hold tension on fan belt and turn the fan. sometimes this works for me. sometimes it will not work on large motor.

Easiest is pipe wrench on the crank but you will have to move it a bit take a look, move it some more. So takes awhile.

Take the spark plugs out, jack up one rear wheel and with it in 5th gear rotate the raised tire, it'll roll the engine around.

if it has the belt pulley just use a piece of rope or chain or an old belt and a bar to turn it. also without the plugs in it should turn with the fan blade quite easily.
on my w-30 i could start it by just giving the belt pulley a flip by hand.

If the spark plugs are out, it isn't too hard to rotate the engine by grabbing the fan belt, and yes, you will need to hold some tension on the belt or it will just slip.

OH, for what it's worth, watch your fingers.

You can adjust them with the engine at an idle. It would be easier to have one person with the feeler gauge and a helper doing the adjusting.

You also can jack up one of rear wheels as been mentioned and place the tranny in 5th gear after removing the plugs. Have the helper to rotate the wheel while you hold your thumb over the plug hole until feel pressure. Then drop a long plastic straw on top of the piston and then you watch the straw rise while the helper slowly turns the rear wheel. When it quits rising you can now adjust valves 1-2-3 & 5 counting from the fan end of the engine. Once these are adjusted to .020" rotate the engine 360 degrees and adjust 4-6-7 & 8. Hal

Another way you can turn it over is to engage the PTO lever and turn the PTO with a large crescent wrench or other suitable implement. This is not as handy as it would be if you can turn it with the fan, but easier than jacking it up.

99% of gas engines you can grab the fan and hold the fan belt tight and turn them over. I use that to check engines to see if they are locked up. If you have the plugs out when you do that you can almost spin them over that way. Oh and just in case some one gets smart here I am talking about engines that have fan belts

I used a pipe wrench on the front of crank on my MD. Pipe wrenches can be hard on things and I'm not in love with the method, but it worked.

I have done many valve adjustments and i have never used the crank , just the fan blade and put some tension on the belt , don't even take the plugs out or injectors .

On my Super M I always take out the plugs and use the fan. Real easy that way. Guess my belt is too tight or maybe because its new it turns without tension on it. I like the idea about using the PTO.

You can use a big crescent wrench (24") and turn the crank without chewing anything up. I've done that and the fan method.
