Can I set valve clearance with a cold engine?

I've got the oil pan, lifter cover and valve cover off my H right now for an oil change and for some cleaning up. I thought this would be a good time to set the valve clearance since I have the valve cover off. Well, as I read in the OM and Service Manual it says to set a clearance of .017" with the engine warm. Can I do it now with some sort of compensation for a cold engine? It is kind of a pain to get the cover off.

Thanks.

Best results are obtained with the engine at stabilized room temperature.

In later manuals IH defined "warm" as any temperature above 45 - 50 degrees F.

Bring No1 piston near the fan to TDC on the compression stroke. Then adjust valves 1-2-3 & 5 to .020"cold then rotate the engine 360 degrees and set valves 4-6-7-8. Hal

I guess that heat wave was a good deal then. You could get almost get a hot engine with 100+ degree temps.

I set mine at .019 cold as well.

Why noy when it was new they were set after running and with engine warm then reset again but they probably wont need it.

I do the same, they are reset after running the engine a while, but the engine has cooled a lot by the time I get the head retorqued, I usually have to remove the rocker arms to get to all the head bolts. By the time I get that done the engine is lukewarm, so I still add the .002 to the "hot" .017, or whatever the hot number is.
