Starting Crank Problem 53 SH

The inner crank coupler next to the crank pin is stuck inside the casting. I'm afraid to whack it too hard from the front of the tractor as I might break something. The outer part sticking out the front of the casting is loose. Has anyone had any luck getting one of this freed-up?

Yes.

Your instincts are good, if you use the bigger hammer theory you will bend the pin and break things.

Unfortunately you'll probably end up having to remove the hood, radiator, and front bolster from the tractor to get it disassembled and free it up.

I went thru this in april with the exact same model and year. I used plenty of penetrant and kept trying to shake it up. also there is a grease fitting from underneath that needs grease.
Mine is free after good therapy.

I have got several to free up by taking the raidiator out and use a torch and heat the steel slider up to red hot and cool it very fast with cold water. I then used my favorite oil on it and start tapping the front lightly. Sometimes you have to repete the heat thing. I don't know if the right way, but it has worked for me.

I was able to free one up on one of my tractors just with spray lube, I can't remember what brand. Spray and do other chores, then pound on it with a 3 foot piece of 4x4. It took me several days, but it finally broke loose. I did not use a hammer, it will mushroom the end. Ellis
