farmall 300 timing

I'm getting ready to put my 300 back together after painting it,and I want to make sure that I put my distributor back on so its timed right. My 1st cylinder is at TDC. So do I turn the distributor to the 1 mark and put it back on and try starting it? I don't know if this matters or not, but the pistons aren't flat-top. I dont know what a fire-crater looks like so I can't tell you if that's what's in it. Thanks, I'll post pictures when the project is done.

Timing should be at TDC when starting the engine.
IF you are at TDC on the compression stroke, turn on the ignition switch, rotate the distributor CW so the points are closed, then with the coil secondary wire (big wire) removed from the cap and near (1/4") metal ground, rotate the distributor slowly CCW until a spark occurs. Lock the distributor in place; you are timed!

I think I broke a camshaft gear on my Super M. (See earlier post and replies on July 1st.) I tried checking my timing in the manner described above when investigating my issue before getting an answer on here, and couldn't get a spark. I have fire to the coil. Could this be because of the camshaft gear?
