1939 H Power

I have a 39 H I would like to get a little more HP from. I pull in a pure stock class. Only looking to be able to spin out in 1st at 4000lb.

The engine is tight. Starts great and doesn't smoke or use oil. I feel like the governor is worn or needing adjustment as in normal driving it seems slow coming on when needed. I am not looking to get into the motor, but was looking for suggestions on carb, timing, goverenor.

Thanks

39's are worth enough more than any other tractor you could probably sell it and buy a built up tractor. That probably isn't what you want to hear. If you do ANYTHING make sure you keep it stock looking.

Your gov probably does need attention. Most are pretty worn out. It won't get you more power, but it will make your gov kick in faster.

There are a lot of motor things you can do if you would like to rebuild it. I would take the head off and get it checked out. They will make sure it is fresh and it will cost less than $300. Just adjusting the valves might help. There are a lot of valve covers that haven't been off for 30 years.

I agree with Sflem849. Whatever you do, don't make it into a "street rod" tractor. Keep it stock looking, regardless of internal modifications. 1939 model Farmalls are unique and they definitely don't make them any more.

one of the draw backs is if it is a dual fuel, they dont pull as well as a straight gas does,if it is a dual fuel you can change the vaulves and seats, plane a few thousandths of the head and change the gov spring, larger ventury in the carb, all are inturnal so no changing cosmetics, good luck

Agreed. I don't plan on changing anything cosmetically or much internally. I just would like about 5 more hp. I am going to try a governor spring. I know it doesn't give any more HP, but maybe will help lug better.

Timing makes them light better. Trust me on that one. It made a world of difference on my SMTA.
