Overbore sleeves and pistons for an M-'51

YT lists a single sleeve assembly for the M with stepped head pistons. I need a sleeve for a 3 7/8 inch bore. Theirs is listed as a 4 inch overbore. For this to fit, is the bore in the block enlarged, or is the sleeve a thinner wall? Will someone please define overbore as used here for me? Thanks.

The sleeve is thinner. It allows a 4 inch piston to be used versus a 3 7/8 inch without the need to bore the block. The original 3 7/8 inch piston and sleeve, as far as I know, is obsolete and not available.

Bare sleeve bore in the block is the same for 3-7/8 or 4 inch sleeves. 4 inch ID sleeve has a thiner wall. IH started selling 4 inch sleeves and pistons for those tractors back in the fifties to go in at overhauls. Not many engines left with 3-7/8 and not much demand for the 3-7/8 size. Don't think IH or others have made the 3-7/8 size for years.
Think I mentioned before that Webers Tractor works shows they have some NOS. 3-7/8 piston and sleeve sets for the tractor. Doubt they will split up a set to sell a sleeve. They may have one thats not listed on the site or know where to find one.

D Slater: Thanks for the explanation. This rebuild is for a spare engine I am going to put aside and use only if the engine in my loader tractor craters, Thus feel it is hard to justify too much expense for an engine that will probably never be used.
However, I may (later) bite the bullet and buy a complete set,

Rusty Farmall: Thanks for the response!! I am finding out that the 3 7/8 sleeves are not available. Am considering using the single assembly offered by YT. I can't see any reason why the slightly bigger bore would make any difference in this case.

Just have one made if you really want just a sleeve. Not that out of site as you may think.

Andrew: I assume I would have to contact a large machine shop. Our nearest one would be about 170 miles away. By the way, thanks for the idea.

It will make the engine slightly out of balance, and I would not do it if it were mine, but that is not to say it has not been done.

now you have me wondering. yrs. ago in school the instructor told us that when an engine gets bored that the oversize pistons are same weight as original's. just remembered this. this was on auto engines in the 1970's.
