Questions for tractor painting?

I have a very rusty super M and want to make it red. I will be cleaning it with a wire wheel, steam genny, and detergents. It won't be a show piece but want it to be red. I plan on using a brush and a a gallon of some kind of paint. What other tips do you guys recommend as for type of paint, and other cleaning tips. I need all the help i can get.

Remove as much rust as possible & use an etch primer first. On the sheet metal use cream body filler on the pits, block sand, two coats of filler primer, block sand with wet dry sand paper, & paint up to three light coats. Thin the paint down for the final two coats and go easy, very thin coats, no runs.

Better to get yourself a spray gun as you can cover areas you can't get to with a brush. It will look better when finished. I don't think a gallon will be enough. Hal

Pressure washer and oven cleaner/solvent on the big main part. Take the sheet metal off and do a good job on that. That makes all the difference. Tell you what, if you wash it VERY well (we are talking 3+ hours on the pressure washer) and do some good sand work on the sheet metal you will have a parade quality tractor.

You have to buy a gun. Too many small places to paint that you can't get to with a brush.

Sheet metal painted with a brush will end up looking like a 12-year-old did the job, no matter how "careful" you are. Sheet metal should ALWAYS be sprayed.

You can do a passable job on the sheet metal and other places you can't reach with a brush using rattle cans.

It will take a lot more than a gallon of paint. Brush takes more to cover, about 3 coats to get a nice even color.

Around this area, The dealers use to do just that when they took in a tractor in trade. They would steam clean it - take off everything they didn't want colored and give it a spray. Add new decals and a little touchup and out the door.

I think you need to get a spray gun. Here is a pic of some tractors i painted with a $50 gun well worth the money.Sorry about it being sideways

Get the IH 2150 from your local Case-IH dealer. Use a nice, soft bristle brush for the cast iron parts. Do not thin the paint. Start at one end or the other, work all the way around, and then just keep going until you have 2 complete coats. Leave it alone for a few hours, and then start all over again. That old cast iron will soak up a LOT of paint, and it probably will take at least 4 coats to make it really RED. Put the paint on THICK. You can brush away the runs and sags as you go.

Get the same IH 2150 in aerosol cans for the sheet metal. With a little practice, the results will be very comparable to a professionaly applied paint job, and at a small fraction of the cost. In fact, I've seen "professional" paint jobs that didn't look as good as a "do it yourself" brushed on paint job.

Just another quick question what can I expect to pay for the paint. Not worried about price. I want to do a good job and do it right the first time. Thanks to all the replies.

As Rusty said above, buy good IH paint.the cheap TSC,NAPA paint will turn pink in a year or two.BTDT:(

It's been a few years since I've bought any, but it seems the rattle cans were about $6 or $7 per can, and I think the one quart cans were about $8? per can. Probably closer to $10 to $12 per quart now, and maybe higher.

I use a steam pressure washer with purple power degreaser (several times). 2 coats of Rustolemn rusty metal primer and 2 coats of IH2150 with hardener. Take your time and if you can, get a sprayer (you can get a HVLP at lowes for $50), It will be worth it in the end.

Harbor freight has a hvlp spray gun on sale for 15.00. I think that would be better than a paint brush. By the time you buy some good rollers and or brushes you'll have spent as much or more than buying a gun.

I have painted a lot of equipment with the Harbor Freight gravity spray gun. It has not failed in years. If it does, I'm out $20, then I will get another.

Hey Mr. Fuller! You remember that H with the loader that I painted here a while ago an had the springers with it in the picture?? That tractor looked about like your M. All I did was pressure wash the crap out of it, waited a day for it to dry, shot a coat of primer, and shot about 3/4 gallon of paint mixed with 3/4 jug of hardener on it. The paint was regular ol valspar from TSC an so was the primer. Decal set also came from TSC. Thinned both primer and paint with cheap naptha. I was just like you. Wanted it to be red not rust. ALMOST forgot to mention, the whole paint and decal thing was a birthday gift from my step-son. I remember pricing it all out about 3 years ago and all told I think it cost about 130 or so. Brushes are a pain. I'll loan you my spray gun, just come to meadville an get it. Kippster
