Farmall 656 hydraulic problems

I have a Farmall 656 that has hydraulic problems all the way around. (Manual Trans) You can turn and turn the steering wheel and finally the wheels will turn sporadically. When idling the the remote with no cylinder hooked up will kill the tractor then the next time it will not effect the engine at all. the 3 pt arms go down and with come up in a jerking motion some times taking 2 minutes. I wondering if my problem is the pump or the flow divider valve? I do not have a flow meter to measure the pump flow. Any Ideas?
Thank You

Have you checked the fluid level? Sounds like air in system or just not gettingenough hydraulic oil.

I did replace the filter.
Just some more info, behind the dash by the flow divider valve I hear a, for lack of better terms, hissing noise starting and stopping. I believe this noise to be hydraulic oil flowing. The steel line going strait up from the left side of the tractor by the pump can feel the the oil flowing when I hear the hisses.

I'm not sure if this is related but the TA will some times work and sometimes you can pull the lever back and the tractor dose not slow down. Its like nothing happens when I move the lever either way.

Thanks again

There's no way the problem would be *just* the filter. To be so dirty as to cause complete hydraulic failure, it would be starving the pump for oil. You can't run a pump very long when it's starved for oil, as it will burn up.

Flow meter is probably a waste of effort at this point, because it's pretty evident you don't have much flow if any at all...

Either your pump is not picking up the oil, or it's not pumping at all.

Your TA is out of adjustment also, but that is a completely different issue, totally unrelated to the hydraulics.

Does your PTO work under a load? I ask because the PTO and hydraulics are driven by the same sleeve gear off the flywheel pressure plate. If that gear is nearly worn out neither the hydraulics nor the PTO will work under a load.

Raise your hitch up, then jump up and down on it to
see if it spongy. I think you are sucking air.
Possible places, filter cover gasket first one,
second is internal return line hose in rear end,
third broken loose suction tube in rear, fourth,
suction tube seal on pump where it goes into frame
to filter . I would pull the third arm cover off
rear and inspect the hose for burst, bend or off and
grab hold of suction tube below oil level to see if
it is flopping around.

I removed the third arm inspection plate. Does that suction tube feed both pumps? If so does that tube suck from the bottom of the case?.
Thanks again.

The two pumps are mounted piggy back and draw oil
from same source and the main large suction tube
in rear draws from bottom of case. However, that
hose coming down from the top goes right back into
that suction tube also as it is return oil from
valves. It's purpose is to reduce cavitation, in
other words , makes it easier for pumps to pull
oil from rear frame. Any leaks in hose or
looseness of pipe hose is connected to on top will
cause air suction leaks.I should have mentioned
also that there is an o-ring between trans
housings where suction tube goes through and it
can leak also.

I guess the old man cant see. The oil level was on low. The first five quarts I added it started to work fine. It was four and a half gallons low. The steering cylinder is leaking bad so off it comes.

Thanks again for all your help. I have no experience working on red tractors. I'm glad their are people who are willing to give advice.
