really at my wits end !

I have posted here a couple of times about my 400 Farmall and my power steering problems. Mine had PS from the factory with all IH stuff. The post was tapped and plugged with a flat plug so that should take care of the oil flow issue. I have taken the 2 valves and the Behelan unit from a known running, working PS equiped tractor, but still nothing. (only when you work the inside valve) The hydraulics on my tractor otherwise work great. I have lost count of how much time I have into this headache, but I'm about ready to put a straight shaft in it and forget the PS all together. Any ideas?

I have a similar experience on my 400 with the power steering. Actually headed to the shop now this afternoon. My project started before spring work and hasn't ended as hay and custom hay came next. Now dad's started mowing second cause he got to the seat first. So long story short, I will go see if my hunch is correct on mine and let you know. Mine PS sucks unless outside or any remote is stroked. Also had issues lifting plow last summer doing demo plowing. So if I'm right ill try to be of help.

I worked on a 450 a while back and had this issues as well, so I learned quite a bit. Have you hooked a gage up to the inlet hose of the PS? If not try this and look right when you start the tractor, if it goes up quickly and then backs off it is probably the auxillary check valve. On the one I worked on the spring was worn and would not put the proper pressure on the ball and let fluid pass thru. This is removed from the bottom of the block. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out!

Maybe I'm totally off base here but it seems pretty clear to me that the oil STILL isn't being diverted to the power steering by the priority valve.

Something else is missing/broken/not right in the hydraulic cluster on the steering pedestal.

If this is all factory equipment, you shouldn't have needed to pull it apart and install a "missing" plug. Clearly something unconventional is going on in there... Something's done gone and broke!

It will take around 1000psi min. to get the ps to work well. If you get a gage hooked up try the other auxiliary levers and see what the pressure goes to once the lever is engage and see how your PS works. Another trial is to remove the hose from the PS and see if you even get any oil out of it on its own without any levers pulled. If you get oil and the correct gpm then it"s not building pressure and by-passing somewhere. I have a clear diagram of the oil path if you are still working on it that should make sense of things. Shoot me an email and I will get it to you.

Did you have any luck? I found I have the plug on the tower. I'm rebuilding remotes now in hopes of success. I have found damage and gunk. Have you checked yours? I am pretty convinced that pressured oil is going to Res somehow. Just gotta find it. Good luck.

From what Im getting from smarter folks than me, the plunger in the priority flow devider valve is worm out. I cant understand though, why on one tractor is works, and on another it doesnt.

I agree. I'm beyond stumped and lost, feel like dog chasing tail here. Bottom valve isn't going sideways to crush spring. Why? Million $ question. If you got my mail other day give me a call, Im slow typer.
