I have battery ignition, tractor starts fine. How could I check the timing? with a timing light. What mark on the crankshaft pulley should the pointer line up with, there are three marks? And what rpm should it be at when you do this, i assume idle? Thanks guys. Jerry

Jerry with what little hearing I have left I just turn it until it sounds like a quiet sewing machine running then retard it about 5 degrees.

I used the following ear method and it runs great.

Run the engine at full throttle, advance until it slow down, retard, will speed back up, then retard until it slows down. The put the distributor half way in between.

Why do you think you need to "check" the timing?

If it seems to be running right, it's running right. Leave it alone. Nothing good can come from fiddling with the timing when nothing is wrong.

Checking with a timing light is an exercise in futility. These old ignition systems are too noisy to get an accurate picture with a timing light.

Tom H in Pa has it right. The 3rd mark that is off from the rest is for getting the flywheel in place to grease the pilot bearing.
