Super A seal replacement help

I need some help on my '51 Super A. I pulled my right axle (when sitting on the tractor) to replace the broken brake. It leaks oil and I want to change the seals on the trans case while I am there. My question is I am not sure how to. Can it be done without removing the axle tube or that plate? Do they just push in? I do not see the old one in there. I figure it's easy but I have no clue how to do it right. Can you get the seals at NAPA? I am going to tackle the left side next.

Thanks for the pointers. Here's some pics I took inside the tube.

The seals are nothing special, you can get them anywhere - unfortunately I can't tell you the size or a reference number off the top of my head.

I will tell you that the old seals are probably double thickness leather type seals - new ones will be much thinner (same diameter of course).

I suppose you COULD remove and replace the seal without taking the tube off - and I understand why you're hesitant to remove the tube - but it would be a LOT easier with the tube off.

They do just pull out and new ones push right in - but they are tough to pull out - and might be a little tough to start and drive in straight from such a distance.

You could just try it - buy two seals in case you mangle the first.

But I'd say bite the bullet and just pull the tube and all that goes with it. It's not THAT bad.

Oh - and that plate stays in place - I can see the seal there - it's that ring of thin metal. But the seal itself is probably 3/4" thick.

As I say, a bit tough to pull out - depending on how you do it, you'll probably destroy it pretty completely puling it out - but that's fine. No advantage to being gentle with it.

Ok, I got the tube off and got the seal from CIH. What is the best way to remove the old seal? I remember reading that some used a drywall screw?

I also remember reading that some tear up the new seal trying to get it in. What is the best way to drive in the new seal? Should I use a small block of wood or just tap it in around?

I know this probably really simple, but I would rather ask and do it right the first time and save some $$$. Thanks for all your help.

You need to drive the seal in fairly straight to keep from mangling it.

A seal driver set is handy for this application, but if you don't have one, a socket wrench socket of the same outer diameter as the old seal can be used to drive it in.
