1948 M what kind of overdrive?

Have a friend who has 1948 M with a overdrive or nine speed, don't what kind or how it works or what it does. It has cable control much like the a PTO engage cable on a truck, no other levers or instructions any where. The cable goes thru the housing just ahead of the Hyd. pump and then goes into the front of the tranmission case to the right and a little below the input shaft. Thanks for the help. Don R

made by m&w gear co. 1 thru 4 standard gearing. pull cable 1 thru 4 overdrive. 5th gear remains the same speed cable in or out. can't rember if overdrive increases pto speed or not. i'm positive someone on this site can answer that for you! larry

The PTO and the hydraulic (belly) pump must not be used in OD. The pump must be disconnected at the drive (plate under tractor) Jim

Sounds like a M and W cable shift and it acts just like a high and low. 5th gear will not change speeds though. It will speed up reverse and the pto speed if it is engaged though.

As others reported it is a M&W 9 speed as the Heisler 9 speed is solid linkage (no cable) and enters the transmission on the left side and the engagement lever is mounted on the platform on the left by the clutch for both a H and M Farmall, Hal.
