37 F-20 Radiator

A week ago I put in a radiator core in my 39 F-20 and was worried about the height. It ended up working out and seems to be in good shape. When I ordered my core I also ordered a core for my dad's 37 F-20. We put it in today. After it was all together we put in a gallon of coolant and waited and watched for any leaks. We found one on the bottom of the core. After a closer look I had the same problem that BruceS. had and the core is bowed because it was too tall. Talk about a kick in the teeth. I guess I am going to take a picture and make a phone call Monday to get another core and see about returning this one. It seems like in dealing with some of these new Chinese parts that patience is a must. I am thinking about making shims like Bruce did on my next attempt. Don't you just wish some things would go easy the first time.

I C, Is it leaking because the fin pulled away from the bottom plate? or is the gasket leaking?here did you buy it from?

You're absolutely right. The Chinese stuff is not a good fit in many cases. A question: did the gaskets come with the core? I think they did with mine, but I did not use them, because they were not thick enough. I got my gaskets from Steiner's; was pleased with them as they are thicker than most I've seen. The thickness helps to overcome any imperfections in the tank mating surfaces and the core itself. Don't know where you got your core from, I got mine from Alderson Tractor. I sent Darrell a picture of my first one and he took it back and sent me another which worked. They are great to do business with. When you get your core problem resolved, I would not install the new one on the tractor until you have tested it for leaks. Like I said in a previous post, block off the bottom tank, fill it, and let it set for at least a week. All the best.

I bought a F-20 radiator core from this site (same core as a 10-20) that was shipped from Steiner and had no problem.

YT may even be cheaper when you include the cost of the gasket.

The radiator came from Alderson's but I'm pretty sure they all come from the same supplier. When it bowed it loosened one of the tubes from the bottom of the core. Alderson was the cheapest on price and the cores came with gaskets from the radiator core supplier. The gaskets shouldn't leak. I am curious about the thickness though. They are kind of a rubbery material and seem to squish a little. I used the red pematex gasket sealer. It is some of the stickiest gasket sealer I have ever used and it held the gasket into place very well. I guess I should be thankful that someone is still making cores for these older radiators. Have any of you just made your own gaskets? I thought about getting some Felpro gasket paper and making a thicker gasket for a lot cheaper than what I can buy them for.

I got one from Rice, not the best price.
It fit good and his gaskets ar cork rubber about 3/16' thick. I have made my own gaskets but wish I had a punch for the holes. oldiron29

I'd call Alderson to see if they will replace it if you pay shipping back to them.

Husband got one from Rice a few years ago... it leaked and Gordon replaced it with no problem. I think he even paid our cost to ship the leaky one back to him.

I called Alderson today and they are having the supplier ship me another core. They were very concerned about the core specification being off. I am supposed to report back to them after I get the replacement core in and tell them if there is still a problem. The supplier is supposed to double check the new core and make for sure it is right. I couldn't ask for better people to work with. Hopefully in a few days the new core will be in and we will be trying to figure out why the mag doesn't have fire.
