Narrow front wobble fix??

Is their a way to eliminate the front wheel shimmy on a H/M narrow front due to the gear sector & steering worm being worn? Our M is bad and it has only the 1/2 gear sector type not the full type so it can't be rotated to some unworn teeth.

I checked with Mother I-H and the gear sector & steering worm & shaft is over $1000.00 IF they can be found. Ouch!! Someone on another site said these parts can be bought aftermarket. Any suggestions as to where?

Is their a company that any of you know of that builds up the worn areas of both parts and machines them back to spec? Or is their any other type of fix that can be done reasonably cheaper than $1000.00?

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Or you could let a little air out of one tire. Steel wheel ranch or
any of the other reputable salvage dealers can probably send
you some good used parts.

Check out the latest issue of RED POWER magazine,
someone mounted a hydraulic steering stabilizer on a letter
series tractor to solve the same problem.

I got a new crown wheel from Joes Farmall Parts. Not cheap, but nowhere near $1000. If you are going to fix the problem, you need to replace the sleeves in the bolster as well. Also change the oil seals while the steering is dismantled. Letting one tyre down is, I believe, not a good solution. Neither is it safe if you intend to drive the tractor in 5th gear. There are two things on machinery and motor cars I never compromise on:
1). Brakes
2). Steering
If you are on the road, your life may well depend on both of these operating properly.

We just fixed this problem on a 37 WC Allis.
We found the lower bearing was shot in the pedestal, the wheel bearings were worn in both wheels, and the worm gear was loose on its shaft.
I tightened up the worm gear by putting in a larger taperred pin, replaced all the wheel bearings, replaced the lower ped bearing and seals. I also made sure the bearings fit tight by punching the spindles before re-assebling with the new bearings
We can now drive the tractor at full speed in 4th gear with very little wobble.
I"ve never seen a taperred bearing so beat up as this one was from the bottom of the ped.

You can get them on ebay for a lot less than $1000, I am not
sure how much but not too bad. No idea on quality. I tightened
up the steering in my H by unbolting the pipe plug cover over
the worm gear bearing and putting a washer in between that
cover and the bearing. What was causing the loose steering on
mine was that the worm gear was moving back and forth in the
housing for 1/8" or so rather than immediately turning the
sector gear as it was intended. I went from 1/3 turn play to
about 1". First washer I tried was too thick and made the
steering stiff so I put in a thinner one and it was just right.

You can get rid of a lot of the wobble without replacing the gears.

Check your U-joints. Easily replaced for a few $$.
Replace the bushings on the vertical shaft.

On mine the sector gear was loose on the shaft. I used an empty pepsi can to make a shim.

Take the top off the steering gear box and tighten the big nut. That should reduce it a lot!

If I recall correctly there are two nuts that hold the worm drive in place. A castle nut inside the box holds it when you turn the steering wheel one direction and the big nut on the outside of the box holds it when you turn the other way. Adjust both nuts to minimize slop.

If you need parts for an H or Super H, the full steering gear is $93.30. The steering worm shaft is $153.25. My H has the same problem, but I"ll try tightening the nuts first as suggested by others.
