farmall h generator check

hooked my h generator to check it and what happens is the generator runs like a motor like it should but when i take the field ground off the speed of the generator stays the same is there a field problem in the generator or what. thanks for any help.

Yes, check the resistance from the F Terminal to the A terminal. If it is open, (infinite resistance)the field windings are not connected properly. If it a three brush generator, the third brush might not be either connected, or maybe it is not touching the armature. The field is grounded through the regulator to make it work. It gets its voltage from the armature. It is an A type generator Googling it will help. Jim
