plow for 1206

Dad used to own a 1206 with a friend when I was a little guy and I want to try and reconstruct what he had. We have a tractor but what model plow would have been built at that time from IH. We think he pulled 8-16's in furrow. I may never find one but who knows...can anybody tell me what model I'm looking for ?

EIGHT bottoms? I don't know about that even in real good going.

The 560 plow would be about the right age and size for a 1206. My manual is dated 1967. 6 bottoms 14" or 16", on land or in furrow.

I concurr, 8 bottoms would need to be in some kind of fluff. 6 bottom 16 were a good pull in productive medium soil. Jim

One more thing, I don't recall ever seeing an 8 bottom that was not an "on land" hitch... 6 bottom is about as wide as you could pull straight in furrow. You would also need 150HP+ to pull an 8 bottom.

A model 560 would be the same era. If it was an 8 bottom might have been the model 700. A model 560 6x14 or 16 would be a nice load here in NEIL on a 1206.

My Dad bought a 1206 and a 6-16 in furrow plow new in 1968. I think the plow was either a model 700 or 710. Just can't remember for sure right now. I can't imagine that a 1206 could pull an 8 bottom plow, unless you have nothing but sand. We plowed with the 1206, a 1066 with 6/16's & a 766 with 4/16's for many years and still have all three tractors.

Here in the irrigated west,a 1206 would be pulling a #642 two way plow(4x16)Here is a very early 1256 pulling that plow.

well you have to know we pulled 6-16 with 4020's even had a guy pulling 6-16 with a 4010 , we have no pics of the 12 but do of our MM 602 pulling 6-16 at best a 75 or 80 Hp we had all muck, peat or black sand in our area. I did get an email from one of the shop guys that worked at Goshen Imp and he too thinks it was an 8 but they had done some Jerry riggin to put it together he said maybe a 500 series....still lost

When my gramps had the IH dealership in Southern Tier NY, when the 706 & 806 came out, he kept the 706D Demonstrator after the annual Plow Day, and our 'tater farmin' neighbor bought the 806D, with the demo 5 & 6 bottom plows. BTW, Plow Day was a thing of beauty, the greenies came over the hill first, and then the Binders, like Patton's tanks- a 4100 pulling 8, then the 806D with 6, the 706D with 5, and a 504 gasser bringing up the rear with 3- made the greenies look sick LOL. Gramps ran the 5 for one year and swapped it for a 4-16 steerable, it pulled the 5 OK, but he didn't like to work it that hard. That 806D was still pulling those 6-16's the last time I saw it in '77, and had had nothing but regular maintenance, just kept chuggin', still using no oil. When the 1206 came out, one of the 'tater guys bought a pair, pulled 7-16's with them both, and then the heavy four-row 'tater planters that they used to pull with D4 CAT's. He liked to show off pretty good, and always had the pair in formation pulling those 7's. Anytime they weren't working, they were parked side-by-side right out by the highway, right across from his house

(quoted from post at 08:28:56 06/30/12) Irember the 1206 as being rated a 7 bottom tractor in all the IH lititure the 806 was a 6 bottom tractor.

Yup, they did like to exaggerate a bit...

A 560 was supposedly a "5 plow" tractor too... Where I grew up, THREE bottoms is all a 560 really wants.

The guys who had 1206s around here back when they were new normally pulled a 16" # 560 plow. In our soils that was all a stout 12 wanted. Normal plowing gear would have been L-3 & in a lot places L-3 with the TA pulled back.

I had a '67 806 D that I pulled a 14" 560. Basicialy the same gears as the guys with the 12s & 6x16s. Many spots I felt like getting off & help push the tractor thru the tough spots. Probably at least 50% of the guys with 8s pulled 16" 550s which was a little bit better matchup.

N way in our Sable & Ipava loams would a 1206 pull a 8x16" plow. We have a 7x16" 720 on-land plow that we pulled behind our MX 275 mfd last yr and in places you knew it was back there

As others have stated, I don't recall IH ever making a 8x16" in-furrow plow. I think maybe Massey did but not positive of that, may have been on-land as well.

I've pulled 6 16's for years with an 806D. John Deere trip bottom trailer plow. Still got both plow and tractor. Would pull it in 4th low. with or without duals. Both tires loaded on land .

Right you are. I love seeing comments about smaller tractors pulling 4 and 5 bottom plows but in southern NM Pecos valley a 4020 pulled 3 bottoms and a 1206 was loaded with 4 bottom like you have. Our 400LP worked hard pulling a 2 bottom disc plow. There must not be any caliche out east! Gotta love those roll over plows.

Thanks for all the replys Mom thinks it was an onland plow, I only got to plow with it one time it was too big for an 11-12 yo kid LOL I was stuck to the smaller 5 and 6 bottom rigs then in 68 we switched to a lot of chisel plowing and heavy disking that I remeber 18 ft disc WOW was that huge 9 shank CP barely covered the tractor width aw those were the days

The 1206s were made in65/66/67 and we had a 6 bottom # 560 plow that we later replaced with a #700 6/16 for more clearance. That was a load and the weakest point on the tractor was the wheel centers that had two bolts that could break than were later changed to the wedge style that was much better. As tractors got bigger we just went a little faster and actually did a better job.An 8 bottom plow would have to be in light sandy soil.We did have an 8/18 but it was pulled by a 350H.P 4WD.
