Something made that gasket blow, the head is perfect, i pulled the oil pan and did the boiling water in the water jacket trick and NO water on the cardboard after a couple hours....

The water jacket is extremly rusted around all the cylindars and it looks thick, is it supposed to be that rusted and could it be making it over heat or could it have a crack that only opens under pressure?

I was given a block off an M today, it was a runner but needs a complete rebuild but should have no cracks (Ill get it checked out first to make sure)......WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!! I have the money for the rebuild but if theres nothing wrong with the motor (and its normal for that much rust after 65 years) I would rather not spend the money....Any words of advice would be great...thanks Anthony

I would use straight heated but not boiling vinegar into the block and dissolve the rust and flush it. If it still seems rusty, I would take off the water jacket side cover and use a wire and other tools to scrape it clean. then see if it leaks one more time.
Wwat causes gaskets to blow is: Time, original defect, warped block deck surface, Warped head, broken or loose head bolts, Improperly torqued head bolts, and (oh yea) time) Jim

As Jim said and if you think about it hold old is that head gasket that blew??? All it takes is to over heat and engine one time to many and yes they will blow a head gasket. Vinegar should do the trick heat it pour it in let it cool and strain it and do it again. May take 2 or 3 time to get it all unless you want to pull it all the way apart and have the block boiled out
