I'm restoring a 1939 Farmall F-20 and am wondering if the wheels and rims are both painted red or are the wheels painted red and rims painted aluminum. I've seen them painted both ways but would like to know which is really correct as they were delivered from the factory. Thanks

The wheel centers came painted red. If you have the rear split rims they would have come galvanized off the assembly line, matching fronts would have also been galvanized originally also. These have the locking lugs that hold the rim to the cast center.
If you have round spokes, or cut-offs they would be all red.
I have seen a 36 F20 Narrow tread with a wide front at a show in Michigana few years back.
He had the F & H 36 round spokes on the rear and the fronts were round spokes also, he painted the all the centers & spokes red, masked them off and painted the rim itself silver, that really set off the dark battleship gray tractor, may not have been factory but it sure looked sharp.

the cast centers were dipped in red varnish, the rims could be either galvanized or red varnish. Depends both are correct. I have a set that are still original and red that I think were from a 38, my 39 still had the originals on it and they were galvanized. I can't say if it was year or supplier dependent, but they came both ways.

Not sure about the varnish as IH switched to alkyd enamel, IH 50 in late 1936, their first use of a high gloss paint.

Thanks guys, mine has the split rims so guess I'll go ahead paint the rims aluminum. Appreciate your help.

I'll do that if I can. If it continues to stay as hot as it has been the last few days it might take a while!!!!! Whew--100 degrees here again today. Send me your e-mail address too.
