model A cooling fan

Need some advice on my Model A engine cooling fan. I added some oil to the fan hub through the screw opening and noticed the oil ran out the back of the hub. I removed the fan from the tractor and disassembled it expecting to find a worn-out leather oil seal where the oil was coming out, but I did not find any such seal. Should there be some type of seal here or did I just add too much oil? I also am curious as to how the dirt would stay out if there is no seal? And finally, how much and what weight oil goes in the hub? Thanks in advance.

I think you turn it sideways to drain the excess out. I attempted to repair the one on my C about 10 years ago. After the repair it seized when I went in the house for a drink of water, antifreeze all over the place--lucky it didn't ruin the engine. Same thing happened on another C shortly after I bought it and all I did was change the antifreeze. Both got aftermarket ones with sealed bearings. I have a Super A that also has a sealed bearing one. My advice is not to mess with it, replace it, they are less than $100 and trouble free.

It is worn out because of no oil. I did fix one just for fun and put a piece of leather on the shaft so it would act as a seal on the rear. It did work if you will check your shaft and the hub you will see its worn thats why the oio leaks out the back. The new replacements have bearings and seem to last. You mite have added too much oil. You could also add a piece f leather or something on the outside at the rear of the shaft. It all depends on how much you do use the tractor.
